Linggo ng Palaspas (Palm Sunday) marks the beginning of the Semana Santa (Holy Week). To Catholics, the Semana Santa is the most important religious holiday(s) that they observe. This is the culmination of Kuwaresma (Lenten Season) the observance of the suffering of Hesu Kristo (Jesus Christ), Anak ng Ama (Son of God.)
Of course the Kuwaresma (Lenten Season) begins with the Miercules de Abo (Ash Wednesday) and 40 days after, the passion of Kristo (Christ) begins, on Linggo ng Palaspas.
So what do people do on Linggo ng Palaspas? Catholics hear mass during this religious holy day. It is a religious obligation for them. They bring palm leaves to the simbahan (church) (see below) which is what they call palaspas. Vendors create attractive arrangements or designs from simple palm leaves.
Before mass is concluded the priest will request the churchgoers to raise and wave their palaspas and he will basbas (bless) them.
Hanggang sa susunod, at isang mapagpalang Linggo ng Palaspas sa inyo.
Until next time and a blessed Palm Sunday to you all.
