Just like in English, Tagalog also has diphthongs. What are diphthongs? These are sounds when a vowel is followed by a pseudo-vowel thus a unique blending is created. So there are 6 types of diphthongs in Tagalog as stated above.
Let's practice some phrases containing these words:
1. balik-tanaw
2. batang baliw
3. bantay salakay
4. nagliliyab na apoy
5. malutong na kasuy
6. matabang beybi
Do you recognise some words? Do you understand the meaning of each phrase? What do you think are the pseudo-vowels? They are W and Y. Here are the meaning of each:
1. balik-tanaw - flashback
2. batang baliw - crazy child
3. bantay salakay - someone who was employed/hired to guard, but instead became the attacker.
4. nagliliyab na apoy - blazing fire
5. malutong na kasuy - crunchy cashewnuts
6. matabang beybi - chubby baby
